Luke 4:1-2
“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.”
No one signs up for a wilderness journey to be tempted by the devil and unable to eat anything. But right now, on day 3 you could be tempted to satisfy hunger with your favorite snack or dessert. It’s at this point that we need to fix our eyes on the blessings that come through our fast.
Remember these four key things that happened to Jesus during the time of His fast that will help us stay the course:
1) Develop a deep dependency on the sustaining strength of God
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
2) Learning how to fight with the sword of the Spirit.
“It is written…it is written…it is written!”
3) Learning to resist and defeat the devil.
“Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” (Matthew 4:10)
4) Concluding our fast in the power of the Spirit.
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. (Matthew 4:14)
If Jesus needed to fast to see the power of God released in His life, so do we. May this be an encouragement as you continue to fast.
Prayer Focus
If you feel like quitting, pray for the strength to see it through.
Reflect on your goals for why you are fasting, as this will encourage you to keep going.
This may be the time you will need to reach out for support from your accountability partner to encourage you to continue.
