Fast Day 11

Mountain of Influence: Government

Day 2 – Repent

Proverbs 11:1

Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight

2 Chronicles 19:5-7

Then he set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city and said to the judges, “takes heed to what you are doing, for you do not judge for man but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgement. Now therefore, let the fear be upon you; take care and do it, for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes.”

Did you know that God is so mindful of scales and weights? He abhors dishonest metrics, calls them an abomination and whoever deals in them as impure. What does this mean for us? Weights and scales are the means we use to make judgements in our lives. If our scales and weights are corrupt and dishonest, so are our judgements. In 2 Chronicles 19, King Jehoshaphat installs judges in every city in Judea and instructs them to judge on God’s behalf with the fear of the LORD, showing no partiality nor taking bribes.

In our judicial branch of government, the statue Lady Justice represents impartiality. She is blindfolded, holds a scale in one hand and a sword in the other. She embodies what we desire of our courts: honesty and justice. We can get angry at a corrupt and unfair legal system whose scales are dishonest, but first do we have honest scales and weights in our own lives? Do we judge our lives the way we judge others?

Your Turn

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I repent for all of my dishonest and unjust scales. Bring to remembrance patterns of partiality in my judgements that I may renounce them. Holy Spirit empower me to judge all things righteously. I also pray for our judicial system and all instances of unrighteousness in it, whether unrighteous laws or corrupt judges. LORD forgive us as a nation for our injustices. Please manifest your power in our judicial system; that your fear would be evident in every law and judgement. In Jesus name, amen.

Fast Thoughts:

As you go through the day think about judgements you make and ask how righteous are they?
