How does God speak to us? | Week 5 | Connect Me To Series

BIG IDEA: The more you listen for God to speak, the more you find out that He’s is always speaking.

21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left. 22 And you will desecrate your carved images plated with silver, and your cast metal images plated with gold. You will scatter them as a filthy thing, and say to them, “Be gone!”

Now the boy Samuel was attending to the service of the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those days; visions were infrequent. 2 But it happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to be poor and he could not see well), 3 and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, 4 that the Lord called Samuel; and he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. 6 And the Lord called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son, go back and lie down.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, nor had the word of the Lord yet been revealed to him. 8 So the Lord called Samuel again for the third time. And he got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Then the Lord came and stood, and called as at the other times: “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am going to do a thing in Israel, and both ears of everyone who hears about it will ring.

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO GOD WHEN HE SPEAKS?

  1. Intentionally slow yourself down

  2. Turn your expectation and focus to God’s voice

  3. Actively seek to converse with God

  4. Reaffirm who is in control

  5. Remember your humble role

  6. Commit to obey

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT HE SPEAKS TO US? 

  1. Audible Voice - Numbers 12:6-8 NASB - 6 He said, “Now hear My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, will make Myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream. 7 It is not this way for My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My household; 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, That is, openly, and not using mysterious language, And he beholds the form of the Lord. So why were you not afraid To speak against My servant, against Moses?”

  2. Scriptures - Galatians 1:8 NASB - 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

  3. God’s Still Small Voice - Jeremiah 32:5-8 NASB - 5 Then he will take Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I visit him,” declares the Lord. “If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed”’?” 6 And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 7 ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, “Buy for yourself my field which is at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.”’ 8 Then my uncle’s son Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard in accordance with the word of the Lord and said to me, ‘Buy my field, please, that is at Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for you have the right of possession and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

  4. Visions and Dreams - Acts 2:17-18 NASB - ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
    ‘That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters will prophesy, And your young men will see visions, And your old men will have dreams;
    18 And even on My male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
    And they will prophesy.

  5. Angels

  6. Creation - Psalm 19:1-2 NASB - The heavens tell of the glory of God; And their expanse declares the work of His hands. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.

  7. Impressions - 1 Corinthians 12:10 NASB - 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

  8. Circumstances - Revelations 3:8 NASB - 8 ‘I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have followed My word, and have not denied My name.

    - Acts 17:10-12 NASB - 10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these people were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore, many of them believed, along with a significant number of prominent Greek women and men.

What stops me from hearing the voice of God?

  • Schedule is too busy

  • Flesh is too active

God is always speaking.

3 ‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

Words of Knowledge

  • We heard from the Lord: “Fear, someone (maybe on the front row) is struggling with irrational fear; scared to walk to your car, fear in everyday tasks, etc.” We believe the Lord wants to set you free today. 

  • We believe the Lord is doing healing miracles in the upper right abdomen area where the liver is.  Ezekiel 37:9 (NLT) Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’”   

  • We believe the Lord is healing pain in right knee, specifically in the back of the knee. 

  • We saw bootstraps, then felt as if someone injured their foot while riding a bull or even a horse. We believe the Lord wants to heal your foot.
