Dealing With a Wounded Heart | Week 5| How to Win Within Series

1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have
rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I
am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be
king.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill
me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to
sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what
to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4 Samuel did what
the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town
trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?” 5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he
consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When
they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed
stands here before the Lord.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not
consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at
the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:1-13

1. HEART TRUTH: On our own, we do not have the capacity to judge someone else’s heart properly.

  • John 7:24 – Do not judge by the outward appearance, but judge
    with righteous judgment.

  • Righteous judgment is holding opinions that are based on being
right or wrong according to God’s standard.

  • The right way to judge:
    a. Judge actions not intentions
    b. Judge with one standard... His
    c. Judge only non-disputable issues.
    d. Judge with restoration in mind

2. HEART TRUTH: We don’t have to hide the issues of our heart because that is the first place God searches anyway.

  • 1 Kings 8:61 - And may your hearts be fully committed (Safe, at
peace) to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his
    commands, as at this time

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But
Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had
Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this
one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to
him, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

1 Samuel 16:8-10

3. HEART TRUTH: Spirit led living is the only way to navigate the
heart.

  • Jeremiah 17:9 - The heart is more deceitful than all else and is
desperately sick; who can understand it?

11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons (boys) you have?” * This was a
purposeful statement. “There is still the youngest (insignificant),” Jesse
answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will
not sit down until he arrives.”

1 Samuel 16:11

4. HEART TRUTH: God doesn’t have to find you because He never
lost you. He just placed you in reserve.

What kind of heart is God searching for in us?

  • Deuteronomy 10:16 – Circumcise your hearts, therefore and do not
    stiffen your neck any longer.

A circumcised heart look like:

1. A heart that serves Him – Deuteronomy 11:13 - ...to serve him with
all your heart...”

2. A heart that loves Him – Matthew 22:37 – “Love the Lord you God
with all you heart...”

3. A heart that keeps His Word – Deuteronomy 26:16 – “...carefully
observe (His decrees and laws) with all your heart...”

4. A heart that follows Him – 1 Kings 14:8 – “David... followed me with
all his heart...”

5. A heart that seeks Him – 2 Chronicles 15:12 – “...to seek the Lord
with all their heart...”

6. A heart that praises Him – Psalm 86:12 – “I will praise You, Lord my
God, with all my heart...”

7. A heart that trusts Him – Proverbs 3:5 – “Trust in the Lord with all
your heart...”

8. A heart that believes Him – Romans 10:9 – “If you... believe in your
heart that God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead, you will be saved.”

Did God ever find the heart that He was looking for?

God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of
Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to
do.’

Acts 13:22

26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new
spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and
give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put My Spirit within you and bring it
about that you walk in My statutes, and are careful and follow My
ordinances. 28 And you will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so
you will be My people, and I will be your God.

Ezekiel 36:26-28

31 Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your wrongdoings and your abominations.

Ezekiel 36:31

  • Loathe = Koot = it’s the root word for Kawtawn “insignificant or
unimportant” as Jesse described his son, David.

  • There is a self-loathing that comes from wounds of the heart and there
is a sin-loathing that comes from recognition of God’s grace and His
glory at work in our new heart.

  • Jesus speaks of this in John 3:3 - Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no
one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

  • Paul speaks to it in 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in
Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here
