The Gift
The Gift
1 Corinthians 12:27-30 (NIV)
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
The Goal
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) – Mature Love
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Some Key Verses
1 Corinthians 14:18-19 (NIV)
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
1 Corinthians 14:23 (NIV)
So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
1 Corinthians 14:27-29 (NIV)
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two–or at the most three–should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
Corporate Tongues - Prophetic/Messaging
Only one person may prophesy at a time.
In order to make best use of the time during the church service only two or three should be allowed to prophesy.
Prophecy must edify the body of Christ and may consist of revelation, knowledge, or word of instruction.
Each hearer of the prophecy must evaluate and then dismiss it or appropriate it for himself.
If the prophecy is coming in tongues, the person prophesying9 or someone else should interpret (Gift of Interpretation)
1 Corinthians 14:15 (NIV)
So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
Corporate Tongues – Personal Prayer
Acts 2:3 –Jews
Acts 10:46 – Samaritans
Acts 19:6 – Gentiles
Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Jude 1:20 (NIV)
But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
